Other Facebook Responses : Age Gaps

This image can be clicked on to view the full story from previous posts on this blog. I have Included some comments made on this of evidence from my Facebook group. Below that are other questions I asked via my Facebook status and Facebook group.

"Don't really care...each to their own. The older you get the age gap does get smaller. Where I do struggle with it, is what is their common conversation point?? "
"What is she thinking? just because you can, does it mean you should? when she wants kids..will he be at that point in his life?..Look at Demi and Ashton. I haven't seen this woman/ boy relationship ever work...You should never go out with someone you could have given birth to!"
"f you love someone, you love someone. I think its hard for people to understand relationships like this from the outside but I guess its different of you are the people in the relationship. I think they know their relationship is 'wrong' by many peoples perspectives due to their age but you cant help who you fall in love with."

When looking at age gaps in relationships, do you feel it is more acceptable for a man or woman
to date a partner younger than them?
"I think that people have become alot more accepting towards age gap differences, as it is shown more publicly, with celebrities such as Aston and Demi, as there was a large age gap. Also there are programmes such as cougar town and things, making it alot more acceptable so people understand!"
"I don´t think it makes any difference if it is the man or the woman who is older. It all has to do with compatability and personality and if they suit each other rather than age."

Facebook Responses : Age to Have Children

These two images can be clicked on to view the full story from previous posts on this blog. I have Included some comments made on these pieces of evidence from my Facebook page.

This isn't really about age - it is a reflection of a traditional society where only a male son is important. Science has made something possible, which probably it ought not to have."

"This is really sad."

"I agree with her. There is a time for everything. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you should."

"I feel this is unfair on the child and selfish from the parents! You will never see your child grow past the age of maybe 20?! I think there is an age limit and a menopause for a reason, who wants to be a 70yr old mum the day your child turns 13?"

"Will she still be alive to see her child get married or have children?? or will it push a teenage pregnancy so she can be a grandmother?"

Facebook Interview

The Interviewee from this Facebook conversation approached me when I asked my network if anyone is in a long lasting relationship with a large age gap. I do not know this person personally and haven't spoken with her for about 5 years, so consider her a weak-tie within my network. I found this interview extremely insightful, when in a long term relationship most peoples opinions from my Facebook group and surveys so far think that age doesn't matter in a relationship. However my interviewee, although in a happy relationship does notice the age gap, stating that the different becomes 'More of an issue as get older'. From my questionnaires so far people said that age gaps become less of an issue as you get older, it is nice to get someone experiencing an age gaps opinion on the matter against people who are just observing. But generally most of my network, this interviewee included believe 'age was never a major issue - it's as much of an issue as you want to make it'.

Another question that I asked on my Facebook group was: 'When looking at age gaps in relationships, do you feel it is more acceptable for a man or woman to date a partner younger than them?' Most people say that it is more socially acceptable for men to be the older in the relationship, which my interviewee commented on saying 'I also think that in our supposedly liberal society there are still inequalities in how age gaps are handled - more acceptable STILL (!) for older man/younger woman than other way round - I'm not sure how I would evidence that - is just my perception ...'

Young Models

These of course do not appear in every day life, but these models are extremely young in comparison to the market they are selling towards. Below, Elle Fanning is the face of Marc by Marc Jacobs. Is this a positive influence on children, does it push them to grow up faster to become more adult like, like the children in the photographs, or is it ok as they have children there own age as role models?

Below Thylane Blondeau was photographed wearing heavy makeup and stilettos on animal print bed sheets for French Vogue. A provocative adult manner or a child dressing up? I have posted these two examples to my Facebook page, hopefully to gain some response. Click here to watch a video on the issue.

Other Peoples Yahoo Responses

This response was given on Yahoo Answers, when a woman of 21 was asking if it was acceptable to date a male 2 years her junior. One of the questions I asked about age gaps was 'When looking at age gaps in relationships, do you feel it is more acceptable for a man or woman to date a partner younger than them?' This response answers my own question along with these responses from my Facebook group:

Hypothesis

Mission Statement: 'Is Age Really Just a Number'

Hypothesis: 'Age Is Just a Number'

When begging this mission to find out if 'Is Age Really Just a Number', I believed that I would find most people agreeing that is is intact just a number, surprisingly lots of people don't agree and feel it is much more than just a number. Take this for example:

For a lot of my subquestions I am also finding controversial responses, this means I am gaining positive results as it isn't what i expected, I also haven't influenced their answers.

Facebook Question Response

From talking to people in the past and iscussing this topic previous to this module I noticed that people were more excepting of a man dating someone younger than a woman (depending on the age of the individuals and the age gaps). So I wanted to gain some opinions on this question. Is it more acceptable for a man for woman to date someone younger?

The male tends to be older in relationships with age gaps, but from these responses it is becoming more acceptable for the age gap to be reversed. This acceptance reflect our zeitgeist, 'the spirit of the age' of our time.

Facebook Page

I have just set up a Facebook page to correlate with my existing Facebook group.

Feedback

This was written by a relative of mine, they are part on my direct network of contacts. This view is very helpful but it would be nice to get opinions from people I don't know.

Feedback

From creating my Facebook fabe, Is Age Really Just a Number? I have started to get some interesting feedback, one person posted this about the worlds oldest mum, who fathered her twins at the age of 70 with her partner of 77.

I found a comment made on this subject very interesting, suggesting this is to do with tradition of a society not age at all, and their opinion goes on to state that science should not have made this possible:

Facebook Group

I have made a Facebook group, this is just another way for me to share my research and gain peoples opinions to generate ideas surrounding a questionnaire. I will be posting images, articles, questions and quotes and seeing what response I acquire, the page is also available for others to post there own individual research, articles, images, questions and opinions on the subject.

My Facebook Network

These diagrams were created using an App that visualises your Facebook network. They show the same results from different perspectives; you can see a very complex Collaborative (Decentralised) network. The diagrams are very complicated and crowded visuals which can be off-putting and unattractive. However, what this clutter does display is the enormous quantity of accessible people available to one person. I am at the centre of this abundance of names, and all the nodes, which in this case are people stem out of my central point. The nodes of people in this diagram are my Facebook 'friends' only, what this diagram does not include, is the ongoing nodes that stem from each stemming individual and interlink creating an ongoing and never-ending network. Making for a greater complexing diagram.

Although not very comprehensible, especially as unpleasant viewing in such a small size, they do display this vast network which is so readily available to most people. (If you click on the image it should enlarge). Just think; if this is what I actually have access to, what will all these people have access to and then all these people and then all these people and then......
